Look Trailers’ Best Picks from Coast to Coast

There’s only one thing classic car owners love more than their cars—other classic cars. So, when it comes to seeing and learning about them, often the best places and best examples are at car museums that specialize in vintage vehicles.

While all offer displays, many host events—from seminars to classic car shows—where you can bring your own vehicle in your auto hauler to display and discuss with fellow enthusiasts. Look Trailers has a list of some of the top car museums in the country, from coast to coast, so polish your chrome, fire up your GPS, and set a course for adventure.

America’s Car Museum, Tacoma, WA

Whether you favor race cars, antiques, British beauties, or cruisin’ classics, you’ll find them here. This car museum also hosts several family-friendly “Cruise-Ins” where you can display your cars, view the museum collection for free, and take part in many other special events happening that day.

The Petersen Museum, Los Angeles, CA

This museum recently underwent a renovation, and the exterior alone is a showstopper. Inside is an impressive assortment of legendary vehicles. Here, membership has its privileges: though general admission gets you access to the cars, the museum hosts many worthwhile events that are member-only.

The Henry Ford Museum, Dearborn, MI

The Henry Ford has something for everyone—and not just Fords. Take the family and plan to spend a couple of days, at least. This “museum” is actually three experiences in one: The Museum of American Innovation, Greenfield Village, and The Ford Rouge Factory Tour. Plan your visit around one of the many special events, including the annual Motor Muster.

The Lane Motor Museum, Nashville, TN

Some like it weird, and if that’s you, this is the place to go. The Lane specializes in European cars and strange cars. Some are in showroom condition, others show wear and tear. But all are fascinating. The Lane accepts cars from enthusiasts—donating or selling—if they meet their criteria.

Larz Anderson Auto Museum, Brookline, MA

Just 10 minutes outside of Boston, this classic car museum holds what it deems the oldest car collection in America. It’s famous not just for its antique cars, but its “lawn events,” which are themed outdoor car shows held weekends, May to October (weather permitting).

Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum, Philadelphia, PA

The crème de la crème of race car museums, the SFAM houses 65 historically significant race cars, including one of the six original Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupes, a Ferrari 250 GTO, a Jaguar D-Type, a 1936 Bugatti Type 57G—and many other must-see vehicles. This museum also hosts the Concours d’Elegance, demo days, as well as car club events.

These are only some of the many auto museums you, your family, and your classic or race car, can visit. For a state-by-state guide to automobile museums and their events, visit the National Association for Automobile Museums’ website:
